Uses
Primary Use:
Treatment of Hypertension by relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure.
Also Used For:
Management of urinary symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Improvement of urine flow and reduction of nighttime urination and urgency Sometimes used as add-on therapy when single-drug blood pressure control is not sufficient
Who May Benefit:
Adults with persistently high blood pressure needing additional control Men experiencing urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate Patients who may benefit from both blood pressure reduction and urinary symptom relief
Warnings & interactions
Warnings:
Cardura (Doxazosin) can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose (“first-dose effect”). May cause low blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)—rise slowly from sitting or lying positions. Can cause fatigue, headache, or swelling in the legs. Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Inform your doctor before surgery, especially cataract surgery (rare eye-related complication risk).
Avoid If:
You are allergic to doxazosin or similar alpha-blocker medicines. You have a history of severe low blood pressure or fainting episodes. You are taking it solely for prostate symptoms without medical evaluation (must be properly diagnosed). You have certain severe liver conditions (dose adjustment or avoidance may be needed).
Interactions:
Other blood pressure-lowering medicines (risk of excessive hypotension) PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil, tadalafil (used for erectile dysfunction) → may cause sudden blood pressure drop Alcohol → can increase dizziness and fainting risk Cipralex (Cipralex (Escitalopram)) → may increase dizziness in some people when combined Other alpha-blockers or vasodilators Diuretics (“water pills”) may enhance blood pressure-lowering effect
