Also Used For:

May be prescribed when monotherapy with metformin or sulfonylurea alone is insufficient to achieve glycemic targets.

Warnings & interactions

Warnings:

Monitor blood glucose regularly; risk of hypoglycemia; use cautiously in kidney or liver impairment; avoid excessive alcohol intake; monitor renal function periodically.

Avoid If:

Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, known allergy to glimepiride, metformin, sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides.

Interactions:

Insulin: Increases risk of hypoglycemia. Beta-blockers: May mask symptoms of low blood sugar. Corticosteroids: May increase blood glucose levels. Diuretics: Can reduce antidiabetic effectiveness. ACE inhibitors: May enhance glucose-lowering effect. Alcohol: Increases risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics: May cause unpredictable blood sugar changes.
