Also Used For:

Combination treatment with other antidiabetic medications or insulin when additional blood sugar control is needed. Improving insulin sensitivity and reducing glucose production by the liver. In some cases, healthcare providers may prescribe metformin for conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (off-label use, depending on local clinical practice).

Warnings:

Rarely, metformin may cause lactic acidosis, a serious medical condition that requires immediate attention. Kidney function should be assessed before starting treatment and monitored periodically during use. Temporarily discontinue use before certain imaging procedures involving iodinated contrast media, as advised by a healthcare professional. Use with caution in patients with liver disease, heart failure, dehydration, severe infections, or conditions associated with reduced oxygen supply. Long-term use may be associated with decreased vitamin B12 levels.

Avoid If:

You have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Metformin or any component of the product. You have severe kidney impairment. You have Diabetic Ketoacidosis or acute/chronic metabolic acidosis. You have a history of lactic acidosis associated with metformin use.

Interactions:

Alcohol: Excessive alcohol intake may increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Iodinated contrast agents: May temporarily affect kidney function and increase the risk of adverse effects. Insulin and other antidiabetic medicines: May increase the risk of low blood sugar when used together. Corticosteroids, diuretics, and certain blood pressure medications: May affect blood glucose control or kidney function. Cationic drugs (such as some medicines eliminated through the kidneys) may alter metformin levels and require monitoring.
