Uses
Primary Use:
Edema (swelling) due to congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or kidney disease; and Hypertension (high blood pressure).
Also Used For:
Prevention of hypokalemia (low blood potassium) caused by other traditional water pills.
Who May Benefit:
Patients who develop muscle cramps or low potassium when taking standard loop diuretics alone.
Warnings & interactions
Warnings:
Monitor electrolytes (sodium, potassium) and kidney function regularly; can cause severe dehydration or sudden dizziness when standing up.
Avoid If:
You have severe kidney failure, complete inability to urinate (anuria), high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), or severe dehydration.
Interactions:
Avoid taking concurrently with ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or Potassium supplements (risks dangerously high potassium), Lithium (risks lithium toxicity), and NSAIDs (reduces diuretic effect).
