Uses
Primary Use:
Suppresses HCV replication and helps achieve viral clearance when used as part of an appropriate HCV treatment regimen.
Also Used For:
Sofosbuvir-containing regimens may be used in certain patients with HCV-related liver disease, including patients being evaluated for/after liver transplantation; exact regimen depends on the clinical situation.
Who May Benefit:
Adults with laboratory-confirmed HCV infection for whom a ribavirin-containing regimen is appropriate.
Warnings & interactions
Warnings:
Ribavirin can cause hemolytic anemia and is highly teratogenic. Pregnancy must be avoided during treatment and for the required post-treatment period. Monitor CBC/hemoglobin and liver/renal status as clinically indicated.
Avoid If:
Pregnancy; significant anemia; severe renal impairment unless specifically managed; hypersensitivity. Ribavirin also requires special precautions in patients with significant cardiac disease.
Interactions:
Amiodarone + sofosbuvir: may cause serious symptomatic bradycardia; avoid/closely manage. Ribavirin + azathioprine: may cause severe myelotoxicity. Rifampicin/rifampin + sofosbuvir: can markedly reduce sofosbuvir exposure. St John's wort: may reduce sofosbuvir levels. Antacids/acid-reducing medicines: check the complete HCV regimen because some combinations can affect antiviral absorption.
