Primary Use:

Ribavirin is primarily used (in combination with other antiviral medicines) for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in selected or older treatment regimens.

Also Used For:

Severe Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections in high-risk or hospitalized patients Rare or severe viral infections in hospital settings (off-label use under specialist care) Occasionally as part of combination antiviral therapy for difficult-to-treat viral cases.

Who May Benefit:

Patients with Hepatitis C who are placed on combination antiviral therapy by a specialist Infants, immunocompromised patients, or severely ill individuals with RSV (in controlled hospital use) Patients with rare viral infections where limited treatment options exist and a specialist recommends it.

Warnings & interactions

Warnings:

Ribavirin can cause serious side effects, especially hemolytic anemia (low red blood cells), which may require regular blood monitoring during treatment. It is also highly teratogenic, meaning it can cause severe birth defects.

Avoid If:

Pregnant or planning pregnancy (strictly contraindicated) Male partners whose partner is pregnant (sperm exposure risk; contraception required) Severe anemia or significant blood disorders Severe kidney disease (dose adjustment or avoidance may be needed) Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to ribavirin
