Uses

Primary Use:

Management of Ulcerative Colitis.

Also Used For:

Rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, maintenance of remission in inflammatory bowel disease, and sometimes Crohn's disease (selected cases).

Who May Benefit:

Patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases or inflammatory arthritis requiring long-term anti-inflammatory therapy.

Warnings & interactions

Warnings:

Monitor blood counts and liver function regularly. May cause hypersensitivity reactions, blood disorders, liver toxicity, and severe skin reactions. Maintain adequate hydration.

Avoid If:

Allergy to sulfasalazine, sulfonamides, salicylates (aspirin-like drugs), intestinal or urinary obstruction, severe liver disease, or severe blood disorders unless specifically directed by a physician.

Interactions:

Methotrexate: Increased risk of liver and blood toxicity. Warfarin: May increase anticoagulant effect and bleeding risk. Digoxin: May reduce digoxin absorption. Folic Acid: Sulfasalazine may decrease folate absorption. Azathioprine/6-Mercaptopurine: Increased risk of bone marrow suppression. Iron Supplements: May reduce sulfasalazine absorption.
