Uses
Primary Use:
Treatment of selected bacterial urinary, gastrointestinal, and other infections.
Also Used For:
Depending on susceptibility and clinical indication: Complicated urinary tract infections Certain gastrointestinal infections Some susceptible respiratory or skin infections Certain Gram-negative bacterial infections
Who May Benefit:
Patients with confirmed or strongly suspected susceptible bacterial infections where ciprofloxacin is clinically indicated.
Warnings & interactions
Warnings:
Not for viral infections such as common cold or flu. Fluoroquinolones can rarely cause tendon injury, peripheral neuropathy, and serious CNS effects. Stop treatment and seek medical advice if tendon pain/swelling, severe numbness/tingling, or significant neurological symptoms occur. Use cautiously in patients with heart-rhythm disorders because ciprofloxacin can prolong the QT interval. Complete the prescribed course unless advised otherwise.
Avoid If:
Allergy to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones Previous serious fluoroquinolone-associated tendon disorder Concomitant tizanidine use Generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless specifically indicated by a physician
Interactions:
Important interactions include antacids containing aluminium/magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium supplements, dairy products, warfarin, theophylline, and some QT-prolonging medicines.
