Primary Use:
Treatment-resistant schizophrenia
Also Used For:
Schizoaffective disorder, severe psychosis, and reduction of suicidal behavior in schizophrenia (specialist use only).
Who May Benefit:
Patients who did not respond to at least two other antipsychotic treatments under psychiatric supervision.
Warnings & interactions
Warnings:
Requires strict blood monitoring due to risk of severe neutropenia (low white blood cells), which can be life-threatening. Can also cause sedation, seizures, myocarditis, low blood pressure, and weight gain.
Avoid If:
History of clozapine-induced blood disorders, uncontrolled epilepsy, severe bone marrow suppression, or inability to undergo regular blood monitoring.
Interactions:
CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, alcohol), anticholinergics, antihypertensives, and drugs affecting bone marrow or seizure threshold may increase risk of adverse effects.
