Uses
Primary Use:
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer
Also Used For:
H. pylori eradication regimens, NSAID-induced ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, reflux esophagitis, acid aspiration prophylaxis.
Who May Benefit:
Patients with chronic heartburn, frequent acidity, ulcer disease, or acid-related digestive disorders.
Warnings & interactions
Warnings:
Long-term use may increase risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, fractures, and gastrointestinal infections. Exclude gastric malignancy before prolonged treatment. Use cautiously in liver disease
Avoid If:
Allergy to omeprazole or other PPIs; concomitant use with nelfinavir; severe hypersensitivity reactions to PPIs
Interactions:
Clopidogrel: reduces antiplatelet effect. Warfarin: may increase bleeding risk. Digoxin: increases digoxin levels. Methotrexate: may increase toxicity. Phenytoin: increases phenytoin levels. Ketoconazole/Itraconazole: reduced absorption. Tacrolimus: increased blood levels. Rifampicin/St. John's Wort: reduce omeprazole effectiveness.
