Primary Use:

Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Also Used For:

Monotherapy or combination therapy with metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin in Type 2 diabetes.

Who May Benefit:

Patients with inadequate glycemic control despite lifestyle modifications; patients intolerant to metformin.

Warnings & interactions

Warnings:

Monitor liver function; use cautiously in renal impairment; risk of pancreatitis; monitor for hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas

Avoid If:

Hypersensitivity to vildagliptin, Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hepatic impairment.

Interactions:

Insulin/Sulfonylureas: Increased risk of hypoglycemia. Alcohol: May worsen glucose control and increase hypoglycemia risk. ACE inhibitors: May increase risk of angioedema. Corticosteroids: May raise blood glucose and reduce effectiveness.
